TRAIL HORSE BOARDING Since Cheri was so severely injured in February, 2005, we have had to sell many of our best horses to help pay the bills. This has left us with extra room. Over the years we have had to turn down literally dozens of people that wanted us to board their trail horses and/or help them turn their horses into the kind of trail horses we are noted for selling. Therefore, we are going to accept a limited number of trail horses to board in outside paddocks and small pastures. (We never mix mares and geldings but will board either.) Pete is one of the best horsemen in the country to school horses to be well mannered pleasure and trail horses. He is not going back in the training business. A heart attack and brain bleed forced him to quit that several years ago. But! He will help anyone turn their horse into the best trail horse that animal can be and in the process, teach the owner what it takes to make him stay that way and keep him honest. Since Cheri is still unable to sit at her computer, a phone call will get a quicker reply. Please feel free to call her at (580) 622-6326. Services and Facilities Available A) Board in small groups in small pastures or in individual paddocks with free choice grass hay and grain twice a day. Each horse is seen at least two times a day. We will see to it that your horse stays properly vaccinated, dewormed and shod -- all you have to do is ride him when you want to. B) Training assistance to train your own horse to be a super pleasure / trail horse. C) If you only have time to trail ride once in a while, your horse may not stay honest and pleasant to ride. If he has not been ridden in some time, we can warm him up for you or take him out on the trail a day or two before you head out to trail ride him yourself. D) Owners may use any of our facilities. We are a working ranch so we don't have an indoor arena or a show barn. We do have small and large round pens and a big pipe arena. We keep cattle and/or bison at all times to train our own cow horses on. Boarders are welcome to use any of the facilities or stock at any time that it is dry and not slick. E) Our ranch is right on US hwy 177, 4 miles North of Sulphur. We are 6 miles from the Chickasaw National Recreation Area trail system with its miles of marked trails that may be ridden free of charge. We are Approximately 20 miles from a large 6500 acre ranch in the Arbuckle Mountains near Turner Falls that is available to ride on by reservation and a small fee. Primitive camping is also available there. Rates vary but are very reasonable - particularly considering that someone is closely watching every horse 7 days a week. 45 years of horse experience is hard to beat.

Trail Horses should 'willingly' cross any creek like this 2 year old filly

This two year old gelding has already learned that he has nothing to fear from a tarp blowing in the wind |

Our Definition of a 'Good' Trail Horse! A good trail horse is one that does everything and goes everywhere the rider wants with a minimum of asking. He is quiet, does not easily 'spook' or shy. He is sure-footed and watches carefully where he places his feet. We ride in rugged country and is takes a horse a long time to learn to travel in it safely if he was not raised in that kind of environment. (Our own broodmares and foals spend their summers running in rough pastures.) A good trail horse does not try to travel faster or slower than the group and above all, is well trained enough to leave the group and ride where he is told to go. He has good manners, i.e. he stands quietly for mounting and dismounting, stops and stands still when asked, is not upset when something is dropped or gets around his feet, etc. In other words, he is a well trained horse, not a 'deadhead' that follows the horse in front of him. We gather and work cattle on all our trail horses! Throughout the "WOLFE RANCH" web site, if a horse is said to be a good trail horse, it means just that. |
